Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Water (or milk)
  • Extra flour (for dusting)

Method

  1. Rub butter into flour, baking powder, and salt until crumbly.

  2. Add water gradually and mix to a soft dough — no yeast involved.

  3. Knead briefly into a round loaf.

  4. Score a deep cross on top.

  5. Bake at 200 °C for 30-35 minutes, or wrapped in coals, until hollow-sounding.

  6. Tear apart and eat warm with butter or golden syrup.
