How it works in the lab

When handling fragile molecules like long DNA strands or folded proteins, lab workers invert tubes slowly or flick them gently instead of vortexing, because violent shear forces can snap DNA or unfold proteins and ruin the sample. The same care shows up when layering solutions for density gradients, where a fast pour would mix the layers you carefully built. Labs mix gently whenever the structure of the material, not just its composition, is the whole point of the experiment.
