Mechanical Lamination

Building a material out of thin, folded, or stacked layers.

How it works in the lab

Composite engineers build laminates by stacking fiber sheets with resin between them, and the properties of the final material depend on layer thickness, alignment, and how well each interface bonds, since delamination at a single weak layer can fail the whole part. Layered thin films are also built by deposition in semiconductor and coating work, where each interface is engineered deliberately. The recurring lesson is that a layered structure has properties no single material in it possesses.

How it shows up in baking

Croissant and puff pastry dough is laminated by folding butter layers into dough repeatedly, and the steam released from those layers during baking puffs the pastry into hundreds of flaky sheets. Keeping the butter cold so layers stay distinct is as critical as the fold count. Both settings show that alternating thin layers, precisely placed, create properties neither layer has alone.
