Aliquoting
Dividing a larger sample into equal, reproducible portions.
How it works in the lab
Labs constantly split one big batch of reagent into equal aliquots using pipettes or multichannel pipettors, so that ten test tubes each get exactly 2.00 mL of the same solution. This is done because parallel samples must start from identical conditions, otherwise you cannot tell whether a difference in outcome came from your treatment or from your preparation. Equal aliquots also protect the stock, since opening one small tube repeatedly contaminates far less than dipping into the main bottle.
