Incubation

Holding a reaction at controlled temperature and time to let it proceed.

How it works in the lab

Labs incubate samples in temperature-controlled ovens or baths because reaction rates depend strongly on temperature: bacterial plates grow overnight at 37 °C, PCR machines cycle samples through precise temperature steps, and enzyme assays are timed to the minute. Incubation is where the actual chemistry happens, so its two variables, temperature and time, are set and recorded as carefully as any reagent volume. Skipping or shortening incubation gives a result that says more about patience than about the chemistry.

Cookies chilled longer spread less, a direct time and temperature effect. Both settings treat waiting as a controlled step with defined conditions, not just idle time.
