Surface Coating

Applying a controlled layer onto a finished surface.

How it works in the lab

Materials scientists deposit thin films by sputtering, evaporation, or spin-coating, where layer thickness, measured in nanometers, determines optical, electrical, and protective properties, and thickness is monitored with instruments during deposition. A coating must bond to a clean, prepared substrate and often needs controlled curing temperature afterward. The lab lesson is that a layer only nanometers thick can dominate how the whole material behaves.

How it shows up in baking

Brushing an egg wash on bread dough before baking creates a thin glossy, browned coating, and a thin glaze or mirror finish on a cake is applied at the right temperature to flow and set evenly. A chocolate shell tempered and applied thinly sets with shine. Both settings show that a very thin applied layer, applied under controlled conditions, transforms the surface properties.
